In May of 1998, I registered Smellavision.com on a hunch: that someday, somehow, the internet would figure out how to deliver smell along with sight and sound. Dial-up modems were still screeching their way online. Nobody had heard of broadband, let alone VR headsets. And yet here I was, convinced that "smell-o-vision" was the next frontier.
Twenty-eight years later, I'm still waiting for my domain to pay off in the way I originally imagined. But something genuinely interesting has been happening in research labs and startup garages around the world — and it's worth a look.
The Research Is Real
A team at Institute of Science Tokyo recently unveiled a wearable olfactory display capable of blending up to eight different scents in real time, synced precisely to whatever's happening in a virtual environment. Participants in testing reported that adding smell to the experience measurably increased their sense of presence — that elusive feeling of "actually being there" that VR has chased since its inception.
Meanwhile, researchers in Hong Kong have developed a soft, flexible, wireless olfactory interface that sits close enough to the nose to deliver scents like lavender or green tea with response times as short as 1.44 seconds — fast enough that the smell genuinely feels tied to the moment, rather than arriving a beat too late and breaking the illusion.
The Hardware Already Exists — Sort Of
On the commercial side, things are further along than most people realize, even if "mainstream" is still a stretch. Olorama sells a professional-grade scent generator pack aimed at VR developers and agencies, compatible with Unity and Unreal Engine, capable of dispensing up to ten distinct scents on demand. Companies like Scentcom and Inhalió have built printer-cartridge-style scent dispensers aimed at gaming, e-commerce, and even automotive applications. And a wilder, more consumer-facing project called Feelreal — funded years ago via Kickstarter — built an actual VR mask that adds scent, wind, heat, and water mist to your headset, with a library of 255 different smells designed by a professional perfumer.
None of these have crossed over into "you can buy this at Best Buy" territory yet. Most are still B2B tools for developers, research demonstrations, or small-batch crowdfunded projects. But the trajectory is unmistakable: the core technology problem — generating precise, fast, controllable scent on demand in a wearable form factor — is being solved in lab after lab.
So Where Does That Leave Us?
Closer than 1998-me would have guessed, and further than 2010-me probably hoped. Smell-o-vision isn't a consumer product yet, but it's no longer science fiction either — it's an active, funded, peer-reviewed field of engineering with real devices changing hands between researchers, developers, and early adopters. I plan to keep watching. In the meantime, since you can't buy a smell-VR headset at the mall just yet, here's where I'd actually point my money in tech right now.
